Working as a Cover Supervisor

Cover Supervisor roles are available through Zen Educate on both a daily supply and longer-term basis. This article explains what the role involves, what you need, and what to expect on the day.

What is a Cover Supervisor?

A Cover Supervisor delivers pre-prepared lessons to classes when a teacher is not available. You do not need to be a qualified teacher - this is a distinct role that does not require QTS. You are not expected to plan lessons or teach independently. Your job is to manage the class, deliver the materials provided, and ensure the lesson runs smoothly.

What you will be doing

On a typical day you will arrive early, collect your timetable, and review any relevant information about your classes - such as seating plans and SEN registers. You then move through your assigned covers for the day.

You may have a full day of lessons or only a couple of covers depending on the school's needs. When you are not covering, you will typically have downtime in the staff room.

The workload can vary significantly from one day to the next, and occasionally a teacher will not have left work for the class. When that happens, you are expected to use your initiative and manage the situation as best you can. That is part of the role.

What you need

No formal qualifications are required. The following are not essential but will strengthen your application and increase the number of schools you are matched with.

A degree, prior experience working with children such as tutoring or teaching assistant work, or experience working with secondary school-age children specifically are all helpful.

Daily supply and long-term positions

Cover Supervisor work is available in two ways through Zen Educate.

Daily supply roles come through when schools need cover at short notice - typically because a teacher is absent. These are the most common type of Cover Supervisor booking.

Longer-term positions also exist. Many schools maintain a preferred pool of Cover Supervisors who work with them on an ongoing basis, covering planned and unplanned absences across the school. If you are placed in a long-term Cover Supervisor role, you become part of that school's regular cover resource rather than being called in reactively.

Whether you are looking for flexible day-to-day work or something more consistent, Cover Supervisor roles can accommodate both.

Good to know

This is not a passive role. Cover Supervisors are expected to actively manage behaviour throughout the day, and situations can be challenging - particularly with secondary-age students. If you go in expecting an easy day of handing out worksheets, you may find it harder than anticipated.

Is this role right for you?

Cover Supervisor work suits candidates who are confident managing a classroom, comfortable with unpredictability, and do not require a lesson plan to keep a class on track. It is a strong option if you have experience working with young people but do not hold QTS.

If you have questions about whether Cover Supervisor roles are available in your area or want to make sure your profile is set up correctly to receive them, message the team through the Help section in the app or email support@zeneducate.com.
