Working as an Invigilator
Invigilator roles are available through Zen Educate during school exam periods. This article explains what the role involves, what you need before you can start, and what to expect on the day.
What is an Invigilator?
An Invigilator monitors students during formal school exams. You are responsible for upholding exam rules, maintaining a calm environment, distributing papers and stationery, and supporting the smooth running of the session. The role requires patience, professionalism, and the ability to stay focused and alert for the duration of the exam.
What you will be doing
On arrival, you report to the school's Exams Officer. During the exam you will walk around the hall, monitor students, and ensure exam conditions are maintained throughout. You may escort students to the toilet when needed and assist with any administrative requirements that arise.
Students are largely self-directed during an exam. Your job is to observe and maintain the environment - not to assist with the work itself. There are strict rules governing what you can and cannot say to a student, which you will learn through your training.
Bookings are typically either half days of around four hours or full days running approximately 8am to 4pm.
What you need
Before you can invigilate, you must hold the JCQ Exam Invigilation Certificate. This is a mandatory qualification - you cannot be placed in an exam without it.
Zen Educate reimburses the cost of the JCQ certificate once you have completed five days of invigilation work through us.
No other formal qualifications or prior experience are required.
When is this work available?
Invigilation is seasonal work, not year-round. The main periods are around Christmas and from late April through to June, with some availability in July. During peak exam season, there is a high volume of bookings - often multiple sessions per day across different schools.
Good to know
Once an exam has started, latecomers will not be admitted. If you arrive late, the booking will be cancelled. Punctuality is non-negotiable in this role.
You will need to bring water and food - exam halls can be long, quiet sessions with little opportunity to step out.
Your phone must be put away for the entire duration of the exam. This is a JCQ requirement and applies to all invigilators without exception.
If you are placed at a school where a relative is sitting an exam, you must inform the Exams Officer immediately. You are not permitted to invigilate in that session.
Is this role right for you?
Invigilation suits candidates who are calm, professional, and comfortable with periods of focused quiet. It is well suited to anyone looking for flexible or supplementary work, particularly during exam season when the volume of bookings is high.
